10 Healthy Fast Food Options at 500 Calories or Less in Canada

Three phones showing Pleit answering light lunch questions, with low-calorie picks from McDonald's, Subway, Swiss Chalet and Dairy Queen

The best healthy fast food options in Canada include Swiss Chalet’s Rotisserie Chicken on a Bun and Dairy Queen’s Grilled Chicken Salad Bowl. McDonald’s Spicy Grilled Chicken Sandwich makes the list too. Each has 500 calories or less, at least 20g of protein, and no more than 1,000mg of sodium.

This guide is for anyone who wants takeout that won’t wreck the rest of the day. You’ll get one pick from each of 10 chains, the numbers behind it, and which chains give you the most choice.

What are healthy fast food options

“Healthy” means different things to different people, so we used a clear rule. Healthy fast food options here are meals with 500 calories or less, 20g of protein or more, and 1,000mg of sodium or less.

Those three limits keep a meal light, filling and not too salty. Out of 502 meals in Pleit’s database, only 38 pass all three.

Most lists of healthy fast food options are opinions, or they skip sodium entirely. Pleit checks every meal against the chain’s official nutrition guide, so the picks are numbers, not vibes.

The best healthy fast food options at each chain

To pick one of the healthy fast food options per chain, we kept the meal with the most protein per calorie. Every number comes from the chain’s own Canadian nutrition guide, as of October 2026.

McDonald’s gives you the most choice

Some chains have plenty of healthy fast food options and some barely have one. McDonald’s has 11 meals that pass all three limits, more than any other chain. Freshii and Popeyes have just 1 each.

Bar chart of meals that pass Pleit's healthy limits at each chain: McDonald's has 11, Domino's 8, Subway 4, and Freshii and Popeyes 1 each, out of 38 in total

Sodium is the limit most meals miss

Plenty of meals are light and high in protein but carry a lot of salt. Of the 66 meals that pass the calorie and protein limits, 28 fail on sodium alone. Popeyes’ Signature Hot Boneless Wings have 450 calories and 34g of protein, but 5,320mg of sodium.

Grilled chicken shows up everywhere

Swiss Chalet, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, Subway and Tim Hortons all land on chicken. Grilled or rotisserie chicken is the easiest way to find healthy fast food options on almost any menu.

Pizza and burgers can still count

A small Pepperoni Feast from Domino’s, two slices, comes in at 480 calories with 24g of protein. A&W’s Teen Burger sits right at the 500 calorie line. You don’t have to give up the food you actually want.

How Pleit finds healthy fast food options for you

Pleit does this filtering in one question. Type “light lunch under 500 cal” or “something healthy at McDonald’s” and it checks every meal in its database.

You get three picks with the reason for each, like the most protein or the lowest calories. If nothing fits, Pleit says so instead of stretching the rules.

The restaurant directory has full nutrition for every chain here, so you can check any meal yourself. Or ask Pleit on the homepage and see healthy fast food options for your own goal.
